I've been thinking about the first time I castrated a lamb with my teeth. (It's a real job, I swear.) I was anxious, and judging by the sounds coming from the lamb, I wasn't the only one. He was propped up on the fence rail, pinned in place by a cheerful rancher named Albert, who was holding the animal's legs apart for my convenience. The blood in Albert's mustache was still wet from his demonstration moments before, and he spoke in a way that reminded me of the directions on a bottle of shampoo. "Grab scrotum. Cut tip. Expose testicles. Bend over. Bite down. Snap your head back. Spit testicles into bucket. Rinse and Repeat."

It wasn't the first time I found myself cocking my head like an Irish Setter, wondering if I'd somehow misheard the instruction. (Spit testicles in bucket? Really?) I had assumed the same expression a few months earlier, when a jovial bridge worker explained that I would be walking up a skinny suspension cable 600 feet in the air to change a light bulb over The Straits of Mackinac, which connect Lake Michigan to Lake Huron. Likewise, when the happy-go-lucky Shark Suit Tester casually informed me that I would be leaping into the middle of a feeding frenzy to "field-test" the efficacy of his "bite-proof shark suit."

I didn't create my show on the Discovery Channel, Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe, to get myself killed or scare myself half to death. I created it to show that there are hundreds of ways to make a living that no one was talking about. After four years and 200 dirty jobs, I'm no longer surprised by the variety of opportunities out there. What does surprise me is the fact that everybody I've met on this gig--with the possible exception of the lamb--seems to be having a ball.

It's true. People with dirty jobs are in on some sort of a joke. Maggot farmers are ecstatic. Leech wranglers are exultant. I've personally witnessed lumberjacks and roadkill picker-uppers whistling while they work. And don't even get me started on the crab-fishermen, spider-venom collectors and chicken-sexers--they're having such a blast they've sworn off vacation. So why are people with dirty jobs having more fun than the rest of us?

The answer, (aside from the fact that they're still employed) is because they are blissfully sheltered from the worst advice in the world. I refer, of course, to those preposterous platitudes lining the hallways of corporate America, extolling virtues like "Teamwork," "Determination" and "Efficiency." You've seen them--saccharine-sweet pieces of schmaltzy sentiment, oozing down from snow capped mountains, crashing waterfalls and impossible rainbows. In particular, I'm thinking of a specific piece of nonsense that implores in earnest italics, to always, always ... Follow Your Passion!

In the long history of inspirational pabulum, "follow your passion" has got to be the worst. Even if this drivel were confined to the borders of the cheap plastic frames that typically surround it, I'd condemn the whole sentiment as dangerous, not because it's cliché, but because so many people believe it. Over and over, people love to talk about the passion that guided them to happiness. When I left high school--confused and unsure of everything--my guidance counselor assured me that it would all work out, if I could just muster the courage to follow my dreams. My Scoutmaster said to trust my gut. And my pastor advised me to listen to my heart. What a crock.

Why do we do this? Why do we tell our kids--and ourselves--that following some form of desire is the key to job satisfaction? If I've learned anything from this show, it's the folly of looking for a job that completely satisfies a "true purpose." In fact, the happiest people I've met over the last few years have not followed their passion at all--they have instead brought it with them.

President-elect Barack introduced retired Army Gen. Eric K. Shinseki as his nominee to head the Department of Veterans Affairs, bringing to his Cabinet a career military officer best known for running afoul of the Bush administration by questioning the Pentagon's Iraq war strategy.

Shinseki, a four-star general and 38-year veteran who retired shortly after the fall of Baghdad in 2003, appeared with Obama in Chicago at a news conference today commemorating the 67th anniversary of the Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor. Obama said Shinseki agreed to join the incoming administration because "both he and I share a reverence for those who serve."

"When I reflect on the sacrifices that have been made by our veterans and I think about how so many veterans around the country are struggling even more than those who have not served -- higher unemployment rates, higher homeless rates, higher substance-abuse rates, medical care that is inadequate -- it breaks my heart, and I think that General Shinseki is exactly the right person who is going to be able to make sure that we honor our troops when they come home," Obama told NBC News' Tom Brokaw in a interview taped for broadcast today on "Meet the Press."

Shinseki was Army chief of staff when, during the run-up to the Iraq war, he publicly disputed the Bush administration's determination to invade with a relatively small force. To maintain the postwar peace in Iraq, Shinseki told the Senate Armed Services Committee in February 2003, "something on the order of several hundred thousand soldiers" could be necessary. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld reacted by telling reporters that the estimate "will prove to be high," and Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul D. Wolfowitz called it "way off the mark."

When Shinseki retired that summer, neither Rumsfeld nor Wolfowitz attended his farewell ceremony.

Three years later, Gen. John P. Abizaid, chief of U.S. Central Command and the main architect of U.S. military strategy in Iraq, told the same committee, "General Shinseki was right." And in January 2007, President Bush ordered tens of thousands of U.S. troops back into Iraq to stabilize and secure the country.

Notably, Shinseki led the Army at the same time that Gen. James L. Jones, Obama's pick for national security adviser, commanded the Marines. Both questioned Wolfowitz's presumptions, before the war in Iraq commenced, about how the fighting would go, and they argued that the Pentagon was being too optimistic in its planning and should prepare thoroughly for worst-case scenarios.

In a 12-page private letter he wrote to Rumsfeld in June 2003 just before stepping down as chief of staff, Shinseki said: "People are central to everything we do in the Army. Institutions don't transform, people do. Platforms and organizations don't defend the nation, people do. . . . Without people in the equation, readiness and transformation are little more than academic exercises." The letter was never publicly released; The Washington Post obtained a copy this August.

Military leaders and veterans advocates hailed Obama's selection of Shinseki, describing the nominee as a soft-spoken, dynamic leader who is widely respected by rank-and-file service members past and present.

Retired Army Gen. Colin L. Powell, who was President Bush's secretary of state at the time of the Iraq invasion, called Shinseki "a superb choice. . . . He is a wounded hero who survived and worked his way to the top. He knows soldiers and knows what it takes to keep faith with the men and women who went forth to serve the nation. He also knows how to run large and complex bureaucratic institutions. His is an inspired selection." Powell, also a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, supported Obama's election.

Shinseki, 66, was twice awarded a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in Vietnam.

Kori Schake, a fellow at the conservative Hoover Institution who served on Bush's National Security Council during the run-up to the war, said Shinseki is "a great choice. . . . Shinseki will be a terrific advocate for and leader of our Veterans Administration. He distinguished himself in caring for wounded warriors while chief of staff, and I'm certain he will serve veterans and the country well."

The Market For Yahoo!'s CEO

The stakes for picking the next chief executive of Yahoo! are beginning to mount--quite literally.

Online market-predictions firm Intrade, in conjunction with Forbes.com, is opening a market for people to speculate on the next chief executive of Yahoo! (nasdaq: YHOO - news - people ). Intrade created the market.

Forbes pulled together a list of candidates for the job. (See "In Pictures: Candidates For Yahoo!'s CEO.") And we want to hear your opinions, too.

Silicon Valley has been rife with ideas about who could lead the Internet pioneer since co-founder Jerry Yang said he would step down. Such speculation, much like picking the Cabinet members for the upcoming Barack Obama administration, spurred Intrade and Forbes to start a market that lets people put down their predictions about who might become Yahoo!'s next CEO. Intrade delivers not just the wisdom of the crowd but the attitudes of those who care enough about an issue to put a little something at risk.


Intrade, which launched its marketplace in 2001, has some 200,000 registered members. The number of active users is in the tens of thousands, says John Delaney, chief executive of Intrade, which is based in Dublin, Ireland.

Any one transaction is relatively small, on average about $25 apiece. (Intrade charges 5 cents per transaction.) But those stakes add up: Trading on contracts about whether John McCain or Barack Obama would win the U.S. presidency totaled $28 million. Pundits all across the political spectrum, from the Cato Institute to AEI Brookings, as well as the U.S. Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan and the political candidates themselves have gotten data from Intrade, says Delaney.

"The markets we list for trading that fascinate people the most are highly correlated to current events," Delaney observes. Until the election, political questions drove activity on Intrade. Now attention has shifted to the economy, he says.

Here's how it works. Intrade opens a market, say, by listing the candidates for Yahoo!'s chief executive spot. Members then take a position on a "contract" that corresponds to the probability that they think the event will take place.

Each single contract, like a share, has a maximum value of $10. Winning trades close at 100 points (or $10). Losers get 0. Say you think that candidate A has a 10% chance of getting the Yahoo! top job, you would buy shares in that candidate at $1. If you're right, you will be rewarded with $9 per share you bought.

Precisely who gets picked to run Yahoo! is attracting intense interest, particularly in technology circles. Although the Internet pioneer has been perceived to be adrift, it still boasts some of the highest traffic of any site on the Web. Many--including the U.S. Federal Trade Commission--continue to see Yahoo! as a significant competitor to Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) in the increasingly important area of online advertising.

"It is a very big opportunity. Yahoo! is an extraordinary asset," notes John Battelle, chairman of Federated Media Publishing. Battelle conducted an onstage interview with Yang in early November at the Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco, less than three weeks before Yang said he would relinquish the CEO spot.

The question is inextricably bound up in what direction the board feels the company should take. In his conversation with Battelle at Web 2.0, Yang set off a fresh round of speculation by asserting that "today I'd say the best thing for Microsoft to do is to buy Yahoo!."

"Intrade is about providing transparency about what might happen tomorrow," Delaney asserts. And so far, Intrade's results are looking pretty good.

Sen. Hillary Clinton responded to rumors that she is being considered a possible candidate for secretary of state.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is among the top contenders to become secretary of state in Barack Obama's administration, officials familiar with the selection process said, part of what appears to be an effort by the incoming president to reach out to former rivals and consider unexpected moves as he assembles his Cabinet.

Obama secretly met with his rival for the Democratic nomination in Chicago on Thursday night, and as news of the visit leaked it sparked a day-long frenzy of speculation that she had been offered, and probably would accept, the position. Clinton allies expressed delight at the prospect, while some Obama supporters reacted with shock at the prospect of the president-elect naming her the nation's top diplomat. Aides to Obama and Clinton gave no formal comment on the meeting or whether the job had been offered.

As word of Clinton's emergence as a serious candidate spread, Obama held a separate meeting Friday with New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, a Democratic official said, a signal that another opponent in the Democratic nominating contest with a deep résumé is also under consideration.

Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.), who worked aggressively for Obama's election, is also on the shortlist, two officials said. Any of those three would present opportunities and challenges for Obama as he tries to piece together a Cabinet that is diverse and that would bring the kinds of qualifications that could calm some doubts about his experience.

Clinton, a former first lady who won 18 million votes in the Democratic primaries, would bring star quality to a position that will be critical in the incoming president's effort to keep his promise of changing the nation's image around the world.

But nominating Clinton would come with substantial risks for Obama, adding a potential degree of tension to an inner circle that has prided itself on cohesiveness. Nor would Clinton, who voted to authorize the war in Iraq, be an obvious choice to convey the message of change that has defined Obama.

In addition to her initial differences with Obama on Iraq, Clinton also faced sharp criticism during the primaries when she said she had endured sniper fire in Bosnia, despite television footage showing otherwise. Some Obama supporters also questioned her foreign policy experience, arguing that it has largely been based on her travels as a presidential spouse rather than being rooted in diplomacy.

Perhaps the most pressing question is whether Clinton would pass the rigorous Obama vetting process, which would include a thorough examination of her husband Bill Clinton's private business since leaving office. Obama aides had said during the primaries that Hillary Clinton was not seriously considered for vice president in part because of the work of the former president, who has made millions giving speeches to foreign entities and companies, including some in China and Saudi Arabia, since 2001 and would be required to fully disclose his private work and to name the donors to his presidential library and global charity. His decision to serve on the board of the Yucaipa Cos., a California private equity firm run by billionaire Ronald W. Burkle, his friend, raised eyebrows, as did questions about whether he played a role in helping a Canadian financier land a uranium contract in Kazakhstan.

The Obama transition team is requiring that all candidates for the Cabinet and other senior positions complete a 63-question application, in addition to undergoing an extensive FBI background check, before their Senate confirmation hearings, according to an Obama adviser involved in vetting candidates who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the personnel process. Candidates and their spouses must detail their finances and all corporations, partnerships, trusts, business entities, as well as political, civic, social, charitable, educational, professional, fraternal, benevolent or religious organizations they have been involved with during the past 10 years.

But officials familiar with the process expressed no doubt that Clinton could receive Senate confirmation.

Substantive policy differences exist between Obama and both Clinton and Richardson. While Clinton is generally more hawkish than the president-elect, Richardson, during the campaign, called for an even faster withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq than Obama did.

Richardson has also said he would meet unconditionally with leaders of Iran and North Korea, and he supported free trade pacts. He called for a "new realism" in foreign policy that focused on increased diplomatic efforts around the world. An e-mail sent to Richardson's spokesman late Friday went unanswered.
