Jessica Alba and Cash Warren

The American Museum of Natural History dance is typically aglow with New York's golden youth, but this year it added a dash of green to the mix. In line with the institution's new Climate Change exhibition, the evening's theme was eco-chic: soy candles, cardboard set pieces, and enough shrubbery (to be repurposed later by the museum's landscapers) for a pack of giraffes. Even if the sea bass wasn't local, the glam guests (including Jessica Alba, Tinsley Mortimer, and Leigh Lezark) were feeling earth-friendly vibes.

After dinner, the party moved to the Cullman Hall of the Universe, where 21-year-old Dior Beauty girl (and, appropriately, Egyptology major) Harley Viera Newton spun dance tunes. Alba, en route to Yale with husband Cash Warren for his secret-society reunion, chatted with Milla Jovovich in the corner. Fabiola Beracasa, one of a half-dozen event chairs outfitted by Stella McCartney, explained her see-through pants. ("That's my underwear!") And Katie Lee Joel learned from a museum scale what she'd weigh on the moon. "It's probably fake," she said. No one was busier, though, than de facto point woman (her dad's the museum's Board of Trustees chairman) Claire Bernard, who, between making the rounds and overseeing a very thoughtful cake delivery for birthday girl Maggie Betts, shared some museum lore. "Did you know that three floors underneath us, there are these DNA labs? They have scientists doing the craziest stuff," she confided. "There was a rumor that one lived in an elevator shaft here for three months." No sign of mad scientists last night, of course.

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were in an airy, loved-up kind of mood as they began their 20th-anniversary celebrations with a lacy all-white D&G collection. Their general drift: Emmanuelle seen through a soft-focus Sarah Moon-ish lens, but designed for a teenager's long night out at an Italian seaside disco.

Dolce and Gabbana have been around long enough to be designing for the daughters of their first late-eighties customers. They tackle the job with a cheerful recognition that most of their fashion references will float straight over the heads of their new audience. "Young people never have too much knowledge of the past, so we mixed the old with the hyper-new," said Dolce. What appeared wasn't really an essay on late-seventies film and photography, but more a roundup of current Mediterranean notions about pretty-yet-sexy dressing. Long, short, Empire line, Victorian, broderie anglaise, organza, stretch lace, and flounces, mixed up with pedal pushers and shorts—they had it all covered. Except for the fact that 80 percent of it, of course, was see-through.

Bottega Veneta

MILAN, February 28, 2009
By Sarah Mower
Tomas Maier's remedy for breaking the downward spiral of depression is irresistible glamour. "With all that's going on, I just switched off the TV news and thought about designing appetizing clothes to make women feel pretty and attractive," he said before the show. "Let's get out of this!" That rallying cry made for possibly his most resolved and beautiful collection yet—gently done, yet spiked with a new undercurrent of eroticism.

It began with simple rectangles of cloth—folded into ivory envelope coats or pieced into fluid charmeuse dresses—and then built momentum through perfectly cut sheaths. One number—essentially a single square of black wool with armholes, wrapped to fall in a ruffle in the front while dipping asymmetrically over the shoulder—looked as if it had been wound around Sasha Pivovarova almost spontaneously. Of course, there's more than spareness of cut going on here. The desirabilty is in Maier's fabrics, some of which are so refined even the camera can't pick up the nuances. The second look out—a cream coat over a strapless dress—passed within inches of the noses of the audience, but who knew the coat was covered with a fine layer of organza, or realized the dress was not a matte cotton canvas but leather? Only the woman who wore it, or someone close enough to stroke her. Which is Bottega Veneta's not-for-public-consumption code in a nutshell.

And yet: This is a time when even the stealthily wealthy need an extra push to open their finely crafted intrecciato crocodile purses. That's where drop-dead sex and glamour step in. Lingerie corseting built into the rib section of covered-up jersey dresses, outlining braless breasts, did that in an outrageously classy way. And then came a sequence of pleated goddess dresses, catching the air as the girls swept past. They were superb.
