a monthly look at the faces
that have made history

Designers tumbled for the eighties this season—and they fell hard. So did makeup artists and hairstylists, who transformed dewy-skinned Slavic teenagers into Gorgeous Georges with contoured cheeks, brightly painted lips and eyes, and braided and crimped locks. Yes, (Boy) George Alan O'Dowd, the onetime Culture Club front man and current guest of Her Majesty's prison service, is one of the season's touchstones. While designers may not have name-checked him specifically in their show notes, his influence is inescapable—let's face it, not even Alexis Carrington piled as many eighties signatures into a single look.

Decades before the MisShapes reinvented club-kid chic, O'Dowd was working it with conviction. As for androgyny, no one did it better than the Boy, whose playful persona had a more approachable appeal than that of his fellow traveler, Taboo founder Leigh Bowery.

As it turns out, the crooner has an affinity for the kind of nostalgic escapism fashion gave into this season. "It's ironic," he told Rolling Stone way back in 2000, "that if you go back to Thatcherism and Reaganism, a lot of cool things happened during that decade. A lot of sexual attitudes were loosened up a bit, and we had some interesting music. So sometimes, within these right-wing climates, you have an artistic reaction." What the runways proved for Fall is that a financial crisis breeds a similar inventiveness. Call it karma.

Lauren Santo Domingo and Byrdie Bell
more photos

Despite the molten sexuality oozing from the giant images on the walls of the pristine space on Mulberry Street, the party Byrdie Bell and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld hosted for shoe designer Brian Atwood on Thursday night was a straight-up family affair. Mother Dusty, brothers Andy and Zack, sister Tory, and right-hand woman Riley Vaill flew in to New York to join Brian in launching Role Play Rene, a deluxe and limited-edition book of photos by Tony Duran that feature an Atwood-shod Rene Russo in a series of steamy clinches with Jon Kortajarena.

The evening's big question was, where's Russo been since Thomas Crown? The actress wasn't on hand to answer that, unfortunately, but word is she's been devoting herself to family life. So how did Atwood coax her to play along on camera? The designer had women like Russo, Lisa Taylor, and the late Gia Carangi in mind when he conceived the project. "I wanted to convey the sensuality of what women feel when they put on shoes," he said with one of his blitzkrieg smiles. But it was his partner, Nate Berkus, who pushed him to go straight to the source. One phone call from Duran, and Russo was on set the same day. Back when, she was a good Christian girl, so if the stunning 55-year-old was indeed role-playing all over Kortajarena, we've clearly been deprived of her acting talents for too long.

A full contingent of the local fashion brigade and a sprinkling of socials were at the party—Dr. Lisa Airan showing just what an asset a pair of Atwood heels can be, and Lauren Santo Domingo wearing his thigh boots a full season before the trend breaks for fall (as noted elsewhere, she added the garter belt herself). And for some pleasantly strange reason, everyone noticeably smelt great. Atwood himself was wearing Jo Malone's Wild Fig, but don't try asking stylist Lori Goldstein about her gorgeous fragrance: "I'll tell you anything, but not the name of my perfume."

Milla Jovovich, Alexander Wang, and Anouck Lepère   more photos

At an intimate dinner Sunday night celebrating his line's debut at Colette—Paris' must-shop stop—and his collaboration with Australian Wool Innovation, Alexander Wang set the record straight on opting out of his usual blowout after-party during the New York collections. "Everyone blamed the economy and the recession, but we decided a long time ago we wanted to do something more intimate," he explained. "Besides, it'd be hard to top last season." (Indeed: How do you outdo a sweaty basement dance bash with a live Foxy Brown concert?)

Thus, a fête of a different sort transpired in Paris. Guests like Anouck Lepère, Dasha Zhukova, and Lou Doillon settled into a handful of tables for a cozy dinner at newcomer La Fidélité (usually closed on Sundays; the restaurant made an exception). Several of the slender ladies in attendance—Milla Jovovich, Lily DonaldsonNatasha Poly, Raquel Zimmermann, and Lara Stone among them—opted to squeeze into a single booth. "And probably shared one dish amongst all of them," one diner suggested.

Laid-back as the evening was, Wang still had something to celebrate: the continuation of the Wang empire in new markets. "I knew this would be the season," said Sarah Lerfel from Colette, who co-hosted the festivities with Julia Restoin-Roitfeld and Vanessa Traina. "The [Spring] shoes and the bags were fantastic. I think what he does is so modern, so fun."

D&G

MILAN, September 26, 2005
By Sarah Mower
Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were in an airy, loved-up kind of mood as they began their 20th-anniversary celebrations with a lacy all-white D&G collection. Their general drift: Emmanuelle seen through a soft-focus Sarah Moon-ish lens, but designed for a teenager's long night out at an Italian seaside disco.

Dolce and Gabbana have been around long enough to be designing for the daughters of their first late-eighties customers. They tackle the job with a cheerful recognition that most of their fashion references will float straight over the heads of their new audience. "Young people never have too much knowledge of the past, so we mixed the old with the hyper-new," said Dolce. What appeared wasn't really an essay on late-seventies film and photography, but more a roundup of current Mediterranean notions about pretty-yet-sexy dressing. Long, short, Empire line, Victorian, broderie anglaise, organza, stretch lace, and flounces, mixed up with pedal pushers and shorts—they had it all covered. Except for the fact that 80 percent of it, of course, was see-through.
