Nintendo plans to launch the Wii MotionPlus, an accessory for the popular console's wireless controller that provides more accurate motion controls, on June 8 in the U.S.

The Japanese video game company said Tuesday the MotionPlus, which attaches to existing Wii remotes, will cost $20. On July 26, Nintendo ( NTDOY.PK - news - people ) will also launch "Wii Sports Resort," a game designed to build on the popularity of "Wii Sports." Each game, which will cost $50, will come packaged with a MotionPlus accessory.

The Wii has enjoyed enormous success in the U.S., outselling both the Xbox 360 from Microsoft Corp. ( MSFT - news - people ) and the PlayStation 3 from Sony Corp. ( SNE - news - people ) In Japan, however, sales have slowed recently.

Sony Corp.'s much delayed virtual community for owners of its PlayStation 3 game console will start worldwide Thursday, but it's unlikely to attract many newcomers to the machine, company officials said.

The free-of-charge PlayStation Home service is mainly meant to make gaming more fun for people who already own the PS3, they said.

Owners download Home software and connect their PS3 to broadband to create three-dimensional digital images that represent themselves called "avatars," and communicate with the avatars of other PS3 owners.

The figures wander around virtual lawns, bowling alleys, arcades and homes in the PS3, but the central activity is playing games and becoming friends with other PlayStation 3 game fans, according to Sony (nyse: SNE - news - people ).

Junji "JB" Shoda, a Sony Computer Entertainment Japan vice president, who oversees Home, said Wednesday the service isn't meant to rival virtual worlds like Linden Lab's "Second Life," which can be played on personal computers and has drawn millions of people.

Sony had the idea for Home before such virtual worlds or "metaverse" in cyberspace became popular, he said.

"This is a community for gamers," Shoda told reporters at a Sony Computer Entertainment office in Tokyo. "It's meant to enrich the interactive experience for gamers."

A Very Fresh Prince

Business 2008. 12. 2. 16:53

With a short hop, the Prince launches himself onto a canyon wall. He gracefully races across its face--circumnavigating a chasm that would send long jumpers plummeting to their demise--before dropping, safely, onto a rocky outcropping. A hop over the edge of his perch and he plummets. But instead of smashing on the stones below, he glides to the ground--his descent controlled by a taloned gauntlet biting into the rock.

It is like watching the purposeful yet effortless acrobatics of Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh in Hidden Tiger, Crouching Dragon. Only this is the new "Prince of Persia." Arriving in stores Tuesday, "Prince" returns to Persia--its fantastical vistas, acrobatics and swordplay--after a three-year hiatus from home consoles.

The hope: That by giving the franchise a rest and a fresh look, Ubisoft will increase consumer demand for the title.

Ubisoft's first "Prince of Persia," which was based on a series started by game designer Jordan Mechner in 1989, launched in 2003 to critical acclaim for its combination of wall-running acrobatics and slow-motion combat. Subtitled "The Sands of Time," the game has sold nearly 1.5 million copies in the U.S., according to market research firm NPD Group.

A year later, Ubisoft released the sequel, "Warrior Within." It was compared favorably with its predecessor but sold less than one million copies in the U.S. The 2005 version, "Two Thrones," sold only 883,000 copies.

Notice a pattern? No single factor can claim all the credit for the diminishing returns--be it new competition or consumers transitioning to new consoles--but part of the problem with "Prince" was Ubisoft's decision to release the title annually.

It is a tactic adopted by the industry's largest players like Activision Blizzard (nasdaq: ATVI - news - people ) and Electronic Arts (nasdaq: ERTS - news - people ). By pumping resources into existing brands, you can guarantee a certain amount of stability in your portfolio. That's one of the main reasons there's an annual update to EA's "Madden" and Activision's "Call of Duty."

Google added voice recognition technology to the search software it distributes through Apple for its iPhone.

Gummi Hafsteinsson, Google Mobile Applications product manager, offered a demo of the application at Google's headquarters in Mountain View, Calif. Hafsteinsson simply opened the Google Search application on his phone, held the phone up to his ear, and spoke.

The application combines voice-recognition technology with Google's search index and the iPhone's ability to track a user's location to offer results keyed to his or her whereabouts. "This is a completely open-ended query stream, so you can say anything," Hafsteinsson says. "Anything you might want to type into Google.com, you can say to this applciation."

The move helps plug a gaping hole in the iPhone's capabilities--voice recognition--while pitting Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) against Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ), whose Tellme unit has long sought to bridge the gap between phones and the Web with voice recognition-enabled applications.

"Imitation is the best form of flattery, so welcome to the party," said Dariusz Paczuski, senior director of Tellme consumer services. Tellme's software allows those with BlackBerry's or Samsung's Instinct smart phone to search for information using the company's voice recognition technology. Microsoft acquired Tellme Networks in March 2007.

Expect more to come. Forrester principal analyst Charles Golvin has long argued that voice recognition, while largely ignored by application developers, will become a more common way to connect users with sophisticated data services going forward. "It's the interface that is, after all, the most widely used, the interface that people are most comfortable with," Golvin says. "It makes sense that this would come of age."

Tellme's Paczuski confirmed that his group is working on similar applications for the iPhone and smart phones running Microsoft's Windows Mobile software.

The update to Google's search application for the iPhone, which Apple (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) will release through its App Store software distribution service for the smart phone, will allow users to ask a question and get an answer from the Mountain View, Calif.-based company's search engine.

The results will also be linked to a user's location. So asking for coffee or pizza will direct users to a nearby location.

The application is one of a number of voice-friendly third-party applications for the iPhone that have helped close the gap between the iPhone and mobile phones that have long given users the ability to perform basic tasks, like dialing phone numbers, with voice commands.

While Google is best known for its Web search service, it has been pushing aggressively into telephony. In October, T-Mobile began selling the G1, a handset built around Google's smart phone software. In April of 2007, Google launched GOOG-411, a service that allows users to call an 800 number to get information by phone.

On Friday, Google shares fell $2.06, or 0.66%, to $310.02. Google shares are down more than 50% year-to-date.
