Better Off Without Yahoo!

So, you just got laid off from the struggling portal. Congratulations.

Ten years from now Steve Jobs' iPhone will be just another obsolete gadget. Rob Bailey's vitamin vodka, however, will still refresh.

It never would have happened if Bailey hadn't left his business-development job at Yahoo! (nasdaq: YHOO - news - people ) in 2006 to pursue alcoholic immortality.

Two years later, Bailey has won awards from the San Francisco Wine and Spirits Festival and the Beverage Tasting Institute and signed deals that will put his Lotus vodka in outlets such as Safeway (nyse: SWY - news - people ) and Beverages and More. "Who would have thought," Bailey says. "I've scaled up from two people to eight and Citigroup has just laid off 55,000."

Or that Yahoo!, once king of the Web, would be cutting its workforce too. Insiders say the struggling Sunnyvale, Calif., Internet portal will layoff 1,500 employees Wednesday in an effort to become a leaner, more aggressive company that can compete with Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ). Word is Yahoo!'s sales force will be chopped by roughly 30%. Even Yahoo!'s vaunted engineers will face cuts, with more than 5% losing their jobs.

All newly unemployed Yahoo's, however, will find plenty of support. "I'd like to tell them that this layoff probably has more to do with management mistakes," says Hongche Liu, chief information architect at people-search engine Spock and a Yahoo! veteran.

But while troubled Wall Street firms, car companies, and media companies may crank out products nobody wants, demand for the online services Yahoo! employees create remains high. Liu even urges Yahoo! workers to master the monetization skills that so often seemed to elude the company. "A downturn is the best time to latch onto the next big wave," Liu says.

Recruiters are already scouring Yahoo!'s ranks for engineers who are skilled at moving video around the Web, building big, stable Web services and making sites friendlier to search engines. Sales people who can drum up new business online while exploiting the contacts they developed at Yahoo! will also be highly sought after, recruiters say.

If you're like most Americans, you might select New York, San Diego, or San Francisco, according to a soon-to-be released survey of 2,500 employees and entrepreneurs across the nation by the Human Capital Institute, a Washington-based think tank and professional association largely made up of human resources professionals.

As the economy softens, this becomes more of a pressing issue because many Americans will find that they may be forced to relocate to find work. But even though some workers may not have the luxury of choice, some cities remain more desirable than others.

Favorite, Least Favorite? New York, New York

Interestingly, New York, which seems to evoke strong feelings in people, also topped the list of America's least favorite places to live and work. Survey-takers who like the Big Apple gave it high marks for entertainment options, professional and personal opportunities, and ease of transportation. Workers who don't like it overwhelmingly point to the high cost of living.

Detroit, which has seen its image only worsen with the collapsing auto industry, was the second-least appealing city, followed by Los Angeles (also No. 5 on the best cities list) and New Orleans.

"People have a love-hate relationship with New York," said Allan Schweyer, the industry group's executive director. "There are still people who think New York isn't part of the United States....There are people who might think that even if they were offered their dream job in New York, they don't want to go from a 3,000-square-foot house in the suburbs to a 1,200-square-foot apartment."

Leading Factors: Environment, Affordability

The survey is part of the professional organization's 2009 National Talent Markets report, which is meant to help cities determine how to improve and properly market themselves to attract talented out-of-town workers. The most important issue for workers in determining where to relocate is environment, including climate and park space, according to the survey.

Affordability, which was No. 4 in last year's list, is now the second-most important attribute workers consider before relocating, thanks to the economic downturn. Affordability might have something to do with the fact that Las Vegas, where home prices have fallen faster than in most cities, climbed to fourth place on this year's list of America's favorite cities.

Companies often have trouble recruiting out-of-state talent because people-especially older professionals-simply don't like to move. The slumping real estate market has made it even more difficult for many homeowners to move because they can't easily sell their homes. According to the survey, 65% of responders said they were satisfied with the city area where they live now and 67% said they are unlikely to move within the next five years. The most mobile workers are in their mid-20s to mid-30s, have a degree or an advanced degree, earn more than $100,000 a year, and work in science and technology, media and entertainment, or professional services, the report said.

Scott Simmons is vice-president and founding partner of Crist|Kolder Associates, an executive recruiting firm in Chicago, said it's easier to find workers willing to move to big cities such as New York, Chicago, or San Francisco than it is to convince people to move to a midsize city such as Erie, Pa., which is a one-hour 45-minute drive from either Pittsburgh or Cleveland. People on the coasts, especially in California, are reluctant to move, he said. And workers often would rather not move to cold rust-belt cities such as Cleveland, Detroit, and Buffalo, he said.

"Perception is a big deal when it comes to places," said Simmons, adding that it's important to have candidates visit the city before making a decision. "Everybody has preconceived notions.... Everybody thinks Chicago is Siberia when it comes to late fall and winter."

Detroit is a particular challenge, especially now that companies like General Motors (GM) are on the brink of bankruptcy. The city, which also suffers from crime and poverty, is still a one-industry town and could do more to diversify its economy, Simmons said.

Jane Howze, managing director of The Alexander Group, a national executive search firm headquartered in Houston, said workers who are flexible about relocating have a strong advantage in this economy.

"These are times where we're all asked to do more challenging things than we did a year ago," Howze said. "The winners are the ones that step up and do that.... Maybe you take that job and make it a better place than when you got there."

Cohen in San Francisco, where his quirks aren't seen as a big deal

Bram Cohen's brain works differently from most people's. He has Asperger's syndrome, a condition that keeps him rooted in the world of objects and patterns, puzzles and computers, but leaves him floating, disoriented, in the everyday swirl of human interactions.

When Cohen was in his late twenties he sat on a wooden chair with a Dell (DELL) keyboard on his lap for the better part of nine months writing a software program. In 2001 he introduced BitTorrent, an ingenious, disruptive, and controversial piece of technology that is available for free and lets people easily exchange huge amounts of digital information,from software upgrades to videos. Pirated movies have always been the most popular files shared. They, along with more legitimate files, now generate about half of all traffic on the Internet.

BitTorrent brought Cohen fame and notoriety. It turned him into a folk hero and a Hollywood villain. Later, to reclaim the program for himself and possibly for some greater good, Cohen was obliged to become something else he had never considered: a boss. Four years ago, at age 29, he co-founded a company, BitTorrent, to build a business around his software. He got good money from venture capitalists but is still trying to find a convincing strategy.

For Cohen, this has been a fraught journey into the sometimes bewildering world of the office. The social conventions that ease everyday interactions can still elude him. He doesn't like to shake hands or wear shoes or make small talk. He often plays with a Rubik's Cube. Sometimes when he is outraged, or more often when he is fatigued, he bursts forth with unwelcome candor. He can be oblivious, lecturing on solar cells or economic theory or euphemisms until someone stops him.

Cohen's predicament is not so unusual. Asperger's, only formally recognized in the mid-1990s, is being diagnosed with increasing frequency. Many psychologists view it as a mild form of autism, though that definition is controversial; some advocates believe it is simply a different way of being. In the coming years more people like Cohen will arrive in the workplace, and their presence will have significant consequences, perhaps most obviously in the way we communicate.

Cohen's childhood in Manhattan was one of isolation. He lived comfortably enough with his mother and father and younger brother, Ross, and they shared a vigorous intellectual life. But he had no friends. At 16, he could program in three languages. Yet he could not comprehend the social hierarchies of adolescence. "I was picked on a lot," he says. "There was something obviously wrong with me. But it wasn't acknowledged until I was much older that something had always been off-kilter. Were I to have to redo high school, I would just drop out immediately." He attended the State University of New York at Buffalo for one miserable year and then left.

"THIS IS STUPID"

Back in Manhattan, staying with his parents, he struggled in the working world as a computer programmer. "At first he would be enthusiastic, and then pretty soon he would tell the people who were running the startup they were doing things wrong," says his father, Barry, a writer who had returned to school to study computer science. "If they didn't listen to him—and they never did—he would say 'this is stupid' and he would quit."

By 1997 the code rush was on, and Cohen went west. In San Francisco he felt at ease, and even a bit elated, surrounded by other computer geeks. Here his trouble deciphering human complexities, his seeming indifference to social imperatives, and all his quirks of character were mostly viewed as beside the point. The point was what he could accomplish. In this, Silicon Valley is not as distinct a place as it might seem. Psychologists have noticed clusters of people with Asperger's wherever there is a concentration of high-tech companies.

It took Cohen a few years and several more startups before he discovered what he wanted to do: find an efficient way to share huge amounts of digital data.
