The Oscars will be presented a little later next year.

The 82nd Annual Academy Awards will air live on ABC from the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on March 7 to avoid coinciding with the Winter Olympics, said Leslie Unger, a spokeswoman for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The 2010 Winter Games are scheduled Feb. 12-28.

This year's Oscars telecast, hosted by Hugh Jackman, aired Feb. 22.

For many years, until 2004, the awards ceremony was held at the end of March.

"It has been in February since then, except for one year, in 2006, where the circumstances were the same as next year, to not coincide with the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics," Unger said Wednesday.

Nominations ballots will be mailed to members Dec. 28 and nominations polls will close Jan. 23.

An estimated 36.3 million people watched this year's Academy Awards, an increase of more than 4 million from last year's least-watched Oscars ceremony ever.

While ABC was heartened by the larger audience, especially among younger viewers, there are still only two Oscar telecasts on record with fewer viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Last year, when "No Country For Old Men" won best picture, the telecast was seen by 32 million people. The 2003 telecast, with "Chicago" as the best picture winner, was seen by 33 million people.

Hugh Jackman was the host of Sunday's show, where "Slumdog Millionaire" was the big winner. Among the earlier awards on the telecast was the late Heath Ledger's best supporting actor prize for "The Dark Knight."

At a time that the TV audience is fragmenting, Sunday's audience was the biggest for any prime-time entertainment program in two years, ABC said. The Golden Globes was seen last month by just under 15 million people.
The largest Oscars audience on record was in 1998, when 55.2 million watched "Titanic" win best picture.

Roberto Cavalli

NEW YORK, December 10, 2008
By Romney Leader
Roberto Cavalli wants to be sure his customer is covered, whatever her summer travel plans. He divided his wide-ranging pre-fall collection into a series of nature-inspired prints in recurring silhouettes. Forties-era suits mingled with silk caftans and sporty nylon anoraks, and there were enough lightweight cocktail dresses for a season's worth of parties. A feather print stood out, particularly in a halter gown with real red-carpet potential.

Jay Leno

NBC's decision to keep Tonight Show host Jay Leno is the company's wisest in a while. Not only does the ratings-challenged network get to keep its ratings leader, but now it doesn't have to worry about competing against him at a rival network.

His new nightly show, which will have more stunts and topical elements but otherwise look largely the same, will air in the General Electric (nyse: GE - news - people )-owned network's 10 p.m. prime-time block beginning this fall.

"Just when I think I'm out, they pull me back in," Leno joked at Tuesday's news conference in Los Angeles.

Back in 2004, NBC announced it would pass the Tonight Show baton to rising star Conan O'Brien in 2009, a decision heavily criticized in the press given Leno's continued ratings dominance and eagerness to keep working. The network spent the years since trying to keep Leno in the fold.

The late-night funnyman wasn't without options. In addition to wooing by NBC, he is believed to have been pursued by Disney (nyse: DIS - news - people )-owned ABC and News Corp. (nyse: NWS - news - people )-owned Fox as well as Sony (nyse: SNE - news - people ) television studio in recent months as well.

In addition to the nearly 5 million viewers who tune in each week--this figure could rise in an earlier time period--Leno's show delivered $233 million in advertising revenue to NBC this year, according to TNS Media Intelligence. By comparison, CBS' (nyse: CBS - news - people )Late Show with David Letterman generated $185 million, while O'Brien's current show added just $79.9 million to the network coffers.

News of the move comes a day after NBC Universal Chief Jeff Zucker spoke out on the need to fix broadcast television's business model at UBS' (nyse: UBS - news - people ) 36th Annual Global Media & Communications Conference in New York.

In recent years, programming costs for prime-time originals have soared as the opportunities to recoup those costs have become increasingly difficult. "I think we do have to continue to rethink what a broadcast network is today," he told a ballroom filled with investors, "and what we want it to be." (He didn't indicate that any major changes were imminent.)

Chanel

PARIS, December 3, 2008
By Sarah Mower
Ruby red lacquered bags like Fabergé eggs swinging from gilded chains, heels sculpted like upturned onion domes, hair-and-pearl-adorned tiaras like those of Byzantine empresses—oh, and strict black Soviet "uniform" suits. Yes, this was Karl Lagerfeld setting off on another of his light but learned excursions into Coco Chanel's exotic history with men: in this case, the Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, and the Russian inspirations—the Ballets Russes, Constructivism, Byzantine jewelry, and Slavic folklore—triggered by their relationship.

"Paris-Moscou" was Lagerfeld's theme for the semiannual collection designed to show off the skills of the French embroiderers, milliners, goldsmiths, and shoemakers the house supports. And it was also the subject of his directorial debut. As the audience—which included Princess Caroline of Monaco, Diane Kruger, Emmanuelle Béart, and Clémence Poésy—took its seats in the plush velvet and mahogany Théâtre le Ranelagh, the show opened with a silent black-and-white cine-skit on Coco's flirtation with Russian-Parisian émigré society in the 1910's and 1920's, featuring a cast of Lagerfeld's friends. (The short film is now playing on www.chanel.com.)

Fashion-wise, the then-now parallels were embodied by the Russian models, led out by Sasha Pivovarova. The clothes—extravagantly embellished with sequins and pearls, tufted layers of chiffon, and sparkling feather fringe—were accessorized with a winter fantasia of military fur hats, gold Cossack boots, and pseudo-revolutionary badges, as well as a smattering of very 2008 leather leggings. If today's oligarchettes are still in the market for super-spending, there'll be plenty here to keep the rubles flowing. And for anyone with a yearning to buy in a different way, here's another thought: The goody bag guests took away contained Cuir de Russie (the classic scent Chanel devised with Ernest Beaux, the czar's perfumer, in 1927) and the new Chanel nail color release—the deep blue, iridescent Nuit de Russie.

Never-ending blankets of snow delayed the start of Russian Vogue's tenth anniversary banquet on Thursday night by more than two and a half hours. "I knew the traffic here is awful, so I ate before I came," said Mario Testino. "I had 250 grams of caviar—I feel like a potato." OK, so Russia's infrastructure may not be in the best of health. But all that talk about the country's economy collapsing? Forget about it. Billed as a "recession chic" meal, dinner came without the delicacies that one expects in Moscow like quail and fish eggs. However, the bottles of Veuve Clicquot on every table didn't exactly say "budget." And neither did the live auction that followed. When 30 dolls designed by fashion designers hit the block, some fetched as much as 100,000 euros, with proceeds going to local orphanages. Billionaire businessman Vladislav Doronin dropped 30K on a doll designed by YSL's Stefano Pilati. It was a present for his girlfriend, Naomi Campbell, the current face of the fashion house. "We've seen crises, we've seen currencies come and go. Only strong, talented, beautiful people survive," said the magazine's editor in chief, Aliona Doletskaya. "And that's who's here tonight."
