This is a transcript of the Market Update: Afternoon Outlook.

Look out for Electronic Arts on Wednesday, after the videogame maker warned that 2009 profits will fall below expectations amid weak holiday sales. The company behind Madden NFL said it will pursue job cuts and reduce its portfolio to save money. The company's CEO said he was disappointed that the holiday slate was not meeting sales expectations.

Investors will be keeping an eye on Wal-Mart (nyse: WMT - news - people ). On Tuesday, the world's largest retailer suspended its share buyback program, citing the poor economy and the troubled credit markets. According to reports, Wal-Mart is also preparing to sell Apple's (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) iPhone later this month.

Meanwhile, the fight for Detroit rages on. Lawmakers are still sparring on the terms of a possible $15 billion bailout. There is concern that the deal does not have enough support in the Senate. Both General Motors (nyse: GM - news - people ) and Ford (nyse: F - news - people ) fell more than 4% on Tuesday.

Wednesday will be light on economic and earnings news, but Korn/Ferry, CKE Restaurants (nyse: CKR - news - people ) and FuelCell Energy (nasdaq: FCEL - news - people )are all set to report.

You know the economic outlook for much of the country is rough, with unemployment rising, home prices falling, credit short and manufacturing, retail and services all in decline. Bad news indeed. But--surprise--there are bright spots across the country.

According to the Federal Reserve's Beige Book report on regional economies, released Wednesday, areas around Boston, St. Louis, Chicago and San Francisco have seen increased demand in aerospace manufacturing. St. Louis, Dallas and San Francisco saw gains in food processing. Most of the Midwest has seen agriculture hold up well, and in Nebraska and Kansas, farmland prices continue to rise.

The Great Plains and East Coast (particularly around the mid-Atlantic) have seen relatively stronger demand for lower- and middle-priced "starter homes." The troubles of New York banks have actually led to increased volumes for banks in Pennsylvania and Ohio, as people turn from the national chains to regional firms.

Eight times a year, the Fed collects surveys from the 12 Federal Reserve districts, representing every region of the country. On Tuesday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its first look at unemployment in the country's metro areas for the month of October. Together, these two reports were the first deep look into how parts of the country are doing in the wake of this summer's banking implosion.

Though the regions are named after the city in which the Federal Reserve bank is located, they represent broader regions. Because the system was established nearly a century ago, the regions are not equally sized. The Boston Fed's domain is only the Northeast, whereas the San Francisco Federal Reserve covers the entire West Coast. But activity reported by the Fed's different districts represents the activity of entire regions, not just the central cities. (See a map of the Federal Reserve districts.)

The mood of the Fed's report is, on the whole, grim. In the dry parlance of the Fed report, New York's economy "deteriorated substantially"--worse than San Francisco's "weakened decidedly." Both regions would have been happy with the Fed's appraisal of Philadelphia's economy which "remained generally weak" or Boston's, which merely "slowed further."

Street Slumps On Soft Outlook

Steve Schaefer, 11.13.08, 12:40 PM EST

Investors took in weaker forecasts from Wal-Mart and Intel, while weekly jobless claims jumped again.

Investors stepped lightly in New York Thursday, after another weak report from the jobs market added to worries over the bleak outlook for the U.S. economy.

The Labor Department recorded 516,000 new jobless claims last week, up from 484,000 the week before. Even more disconcerting was another increase in the number of continuing claims, which is nearing 4.0 million. Wall Street mostly took the data in stride though, and actually opened higher. But the market was in neutral by midday, as stocks sought direction following troubling forecasts from Intel (nasdaq: INTC - news - people ) and Wal-Mart (nyse: WMT - news - people ). (See "Wal-Mart Gears Up For Weak Sales.")

Wal-Mart narrowed its fourth-quarter profit forecast, but expressed optimism for the holiday season, while Intel cut its revenue and gross margin projections due to a weaker business outlook. Still, the major average were searching for direction at midday, as the Dow was off 24 points, or 0.3%, to 8,258; the S&P 500 slipped 1 point, or 0.1%, to 852; and the Nasdaq dropped 18 points, or 1.2%, to 1,481. Wal-Mart shares were down 52 cents, or 1.0%, to $52.10, and Intel fell 18 cents, or 1.3%, to $13.34.

Las Vegas Sands (nyse: LVS - news - people ) said it will lay off 11,000 construction workers at properties in Macau. The casino operator is suspending construction in the area as it copes with limited financing options and is in talks to raise $1.5 billion to $2.0 billion to finance Macau projects. Shares of Las Vegas Sands managed to gain 28 cents, or 5.5%, to $5.38, on optimism that it will be able to get its finances back in order.

Despite the economic concerns and worry over the pullback in consumer spending, buying demand for Treasury Securities eased Thursday, and yields crept higher. The benchmark 10-year note was returning 3.74%, up from 3.67% Wednesday. The three-year note, which drew robust demand in an auction that reintroduced it Monday, was yielding 1.55%, down from 1.60% Wednesday as traders clamored for it.
